Soil Stabilization for Residential Recreation Building

Problem

Problem

The residential recreation building in Houston, Texas, faced severe soil stabilization issues affecting the driveways and sidewalks. Significant sinkage had occurred, making these areas unstable and unsafe. This compromised the functionality and safety of the driveways and sidewalks.

Analysis

A thorough site assessment revealed significant voids and loose soil beneath the driveways and sidewalks, primarily caused by soil erosion and improper water drainage. These unstable conditions necessitated an effective and robust soil stabilization method to ensure long-term durability and safety of the concrete structures. The analysis also involved identifying the specific soil types present, assessing the extent of the erosion, and determining the best materials and methods to use for stabilization.

Solution

Terratek Service Group devised a comprehensive soil stabilization plan tailored to the client's need

  1. Excavation: We began by excavating the unstable soil to a depth of 18 inches, as specified by the project architect. This step was crucial to remove all the compromised material and prepare the area for stabilization.
  2. Preparation and Compacting: We introduced 410 tons of 2% cement-stabilized sand, placing it in 6-inch lifts. Each layer was meticulously compacted using plate compactors. To ensure the highest quality, each layer underwent inspection by a third-party to verify a minimum compaction rate of 95%.
  3. Formwork and Reinforcement: After achieving the necessary compaction, we proceeded with the installation of formwork and reinforcement. This stage was essential to prepare for the final concrete pouring, ensuring a robust and stable framework for the new concrete surfaces.
  4. Final Compaction and Finishing: The final compaction was performed to ensure a smooth and durable finish. The stabilized base was then ready for concrete pouring, resulting in a seamless and resilient driveway and sidewalk surface.

Results

  • Restored Stability: The stabilized soil provided a secure foundation for the driveways and sidewalks, effectively preventing further subsidence. This restored the safety and functionality of the property.
  • Enhanced Durability: The use of cement-stabilized sand and meticulous compaction techniques ensured the long-term durability of the concrete surfaces. This extended the lifespan of the driveways and sidewalks, reducing future maintenance costs.
  • Customer Satisfaction: The project was completed efficiently and met all client requirements, ensuring their complete satisfaction with the results. The client appreciated the professionalism and attention to detail demonstrated by Terratek Service Group.
